Childhood Magic
Today's weather was purely amazing. After the 100+ degree days we've been having it was so refreshing just to be able to go to the park and not be drenched in sweat after 5 minutes of playing. There was a light drizzle and a cool breeze. Just the way we like it! Living in Texas, I feel like we spend much of our summers cooped up indoors because it's so damn hot. Sure there's swimming, but other than that there isn't much to do to keep cool.
Being stuck inside with kids isn't ideal. Kids are kind of like dogs in the sense that they need to get out and run around and release some energy or else they go crazy. We all go crazy! So you can imagine what an entire sheltered summer is like.
As I watched my kids run around and play today I begin to think about my summers as a child. I spent nearly all day outside. In my memory I have no recollection of it being unbearably hot. I'm sure it had to have been because I've always been in Texas, but I never remember complaining about it or having it damper my fun. Kids just don't get bothered about those things the way that adults do. Kids just want to have fun at the end of the day and a little or a lot a bit of heat isn't going to stop them.
There is something just so magical about childhood. They find pleasures in the simplest of ways. They aren't thinking about the past or pondering the future. They are sincerely engulfed in the present.
As we age, we are highly encouraged to be less like a child and more like an "adult", but this is where we falter. If anything we should wish to become more like children as we grow up. Adults worry so much about what others think and stress about things that our out of our control when really life is so short. The best way to live is as if everyday is a chance for a new adventure. Live as if everyday were your only day. Live life through the eyes of a child.
I'm eternally grateful that I get to witness this magic on a daily basis and my wish is to be more and more like my children everyday.
